Villa Carlotta
The villa is one of the most famous of the Lario, it rises on a morainic hill on the western side of the Lake Como, and occupies one area of 70.000 square meters.
It was built, like house of campaign, around the 1690 by marquis Giorgio Clerici, important personality of Spanish Milan and then Austrian to which the great "C” in the gate refers. It is decorated with the magnificent ceilings painted in Lombardic baroque style of the second floor, and with the garden, with the staircases, the balustrade, the fountains and the waterfall of the dwaries.
The name of the architect who planned the villa is unknown. In 1795 it was sold to Gian Battista Sommariva, lawyer and politician from Lodi, who carried it to its maximum splendor, enriching it of important art works (paintings and a collection of sculptures), and building a park in English style near the already existing Italian garden.
The residence was yielded in 1843 to princess Marianna di Nassau, wife of prince Alberto di Prussia, that donated it to the daughter Carlotta, from who the villa took the name, in occasion of the wedding with the granduke Giorgio di Sassonia Meiningen. The merit of the widening of the garden is due to him, and also the addition of the “ English garden”, known and appreciated all over the world. The Sassonia-Meiningen maintained the property until the first World war and reorganized the new park inserting new species and variety of plants.

Externally characterized by scenographic staircase and a luxury garden where, thanks to the exceptional climate of this part of the lake, a botanical patrimony of more than 500 plants can be admired .
Between the plants of greater interest, there is a giant sequoia, the tree of the cork, the one of the camphor and also the one of the myrrh, then, papyruses and banana trees. Always admired the pergola of the citruses: oranges, Mandarin, grapefruits, cedars, lemons, bergamots.
The perspectives of architecture for garden are full of evocative interest.

The villa has, in his inside, marbles of Canova, between which “Amore and Psiche”, the most famous work of the villa, finished by Adamo Tavolini in 1824, the large frieze by Berthel Thorvaldsen with the Income of Alexander Magno to Babylon, carved from 1817 to 1828, ornaments of Thorvaldsen, vommissioned by Napoleon in 1811-12 for the hall of the throne of the Quirinale,then executed in marble for the count Sommariva in 1816-28, the last kiss of Juliet and Romeo by Francesco Hayez, frescoes by Appiani, tapestries and furnitures of centuries XVIII-XIX. In the neoclassical chapel(1855) there are high reliefs by P. Marquises.
In the hall of chalks, among other things, sketches, reliefs and statues for the arc of the peace of Milan by Acquisti and by Pacetti (1815).
From 1927 the villa is of property of the state, that manages it through the independent Agency Villa Carlotta.
